Purpurea

Corylus avellana Purpurea

Hazelnut
This large shrub has beautifully discolouring leaves, from purplish-red in spring to purple-brown in autumn. Flowers in February / March with graceful 'catkins'. Produces large, good-tasting hazelnuts in the autumn. This shrub attracts bees and butterflies.

Pollination
The Purpurea is self-pollinating, but more successful by cross-pollinating with other hazel trees. Also suitable as an ornamental shrub.

Pruning
The Purpurea is best pruned in autumn / winter. Make sure that the plant has a nice open structure. A hazel bears fruit on 1-year-old shoots that receive a lot of direct sunlight.

Fertilization
Give an organic-mineral fertilizer at the end of winter. Grows on almost any soil, is not susceptible to diseases and is hardy.
