Fig
A fig bush is very decorative because of its large lobed leaves. Figs require a sheltered, warm spot in the garden, they do well in all types of soil, provided they are not too wet. Figs are sham fruits; the seeds are the actual fruit, the pulp around it offers protection. The fruit cycle of the fig is very special. There may be fruits from this year in the same leaf axil, but also fruits from last year. The fruits of the previous year are ripe in the second year.
Storage
Fresh figs have a limited shelf life. It is best to eat them as soon as possible. If you want to keep them for a few days, put them in the fridge. If you start to see brown spots on fresh figs, the taste will also change: not sweet but sour. The figs are then no longer tasty.
Cleaning
Wash the figs with water if you want to eat them 'pure nature'. You can also choose to remove the peel.
Consumption
Figs are often recommended as a tasty snack. Rightly so, because figs are nutritious, healthy, slim and extremely versatile. You can eat figs fresh or dried and with or without the peel. The use of figs in the kitchen offers a variety of possibilities. Delicious with cheese, raw ham, poultry, salmon, game, desserts, pies, fruit salads or yogurt. You can also make jam out of it.
Nutritional
value Figs are delicious and not even that high in calories and they are high in fiber. Figs are therefore highly recommended as a snack. They also help with dieting because they make you feel full. If you eat figs to suppress the feeling of hunger, choose fresh figs. They contain the fewest calories. Dried figs are to be avoided. They contain too much sugar. The difference between the two fig varieties can be as much as four times more sweet. That is of course not the intention with diets. Diabetes patients also benefit from fresh figs, but not the dried version, of course. Did you know that figs help against anemia? In addition to calcium and vitamin C, the fruit also contains iron. Figs also contain pectin, a fiber that lowers cholesterol. The small seeds in the fruit stimulate the intestinal flora. A little health bomb!
