Chokeberry

An unknown fruit for many. This berry bush blooms in May with large white umbels. In summer, these flowers grow into edible black berries. Because of the flowers, the chokeberry attracts many pollinating insects such as (honey) bees and butterflies. This is also good for the pollination of other (fruit) trees and plants.

Storage
The chokeberry is best kept in the refrigerator. Spread out on a plate. Make sure the berries don't get too moist.

Cleaning
Wash the chokeberries under the tap and let them drain in a colander. Only then remove the stems. Only clean the chokeberries just before consumption, so they stay nice and fresh.

Consumption
The chokeberry is often used to make jams and jellies, often in combination with other fruits. You can also make a good strong drink or juice from the chokeberry, due to the dark color and sour / sweet taste. The juice of the chokeberries can also be used for marinade for game meat. You can also dry tasty raisins from chokeberries. The chokeberries themselves have a somewhat more sour taste, comparable to the aroma of the black currant.

Nutritional value
The small berries are full of vitamins and good substances. The chokeberry even contains anti-carcinogenic substances. The chokeberry also contains vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin B12, vitamin D and minerals such as iron and iodine. So you can enjoy a very healthy snack from the chokeberry!
