Cherry

“EAT CHERRIES HERE” A term that you will encounter a lot along the road during the cherry season. Take a ride through the Betuwe and you will encounter these signs frequently. Usually they are on the edge of a cherry orchard. The cherry orchard is characterized by the beautiful blossom in May, after which a large net is stretched over the cherry tree to prevent starlings from feasting on this delicious late summer fruit. And then, in June, the first cherries are red. Sales continue until September, but most cherries are picked in June and July. Most people love those firm, sweet and crunchy meat cherries. But, there are also sour cherries. These are also called cherries. The color of the various cherry varieties also varies quite a bit.

Pruning information
Cherries are real growers, but if you want to keep the tree small, prune back all newly grown shoots so that 4 or 5 leaves remain. Continue to do this until the end of the growing season.

Storage
Cherries are best stored in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. Preferably not stacked together in a plastic bag but spread out on a plate or saucer. This prevents bruising and prevents a rotten cherry from igniting the other cherries. But, this delicious fruit doesn't stay in the fridge for days, does it?

Cleaning
How do you clean cherries? That is not hard. Just rinse them well under running water. Then drain them in a colander and only remove the stems after rinsing. This prevents the cherries from filling up with water and losing aroma

Consumption
Cherries are usually eaten out of hand. You can also process cherries as jam and juice. The cherry is also very suitable as a garnish for ice cream, pastries and desserts.

Nutritional
value Cherries are healthy too! They are high in carbohydrates, calcium and vitamin C.
