Blackberry and raspberry
Blackberries and raspberries both fall under the genus 'Rubus'. They are sham fruits; the seeds are the actual fruit, the pulp around it offers protection. Blackberries and raspberries are among the most vulnerable 'soft fruit' varieties. They are often quite pricey, so that makes it even more interesting to grow them yourself in your own garden.
Storing
Blackberries and raspberries cannot be stored for a long time, unless you freeze them. The advice is to keep them in the fridge for no longer than three days at most. It is best to eat them immediately after you have picked them. Crushed raspberries go moldy quickly, so pick them very carefully.
Cleaning
Raspberries and blackberries are delicate fruits. Always keep them in the fridge and wash them very carefully. You cannot rinse them under the cold tap because then the fruits will be damaged. Therefore, carefully place them in a colander placed in a large container of water. Under the crown sometimes worms occur. If you come across them, put the blackberries in salt water for a while. Then rinse them well and all worms are gone.
Consumption
Raspberries and blackberries are usually eaten right away. They are very low in calories and a little whipped cream is a great decoration for these tasty fruits. Yet there are also many culinary options with blackberries and raspberries.
Nutritional value
The raspberry is low in calories and rich in vitamin C and fiber. They contain unique antioxidants called ellagitannins. In test tubes, ellagitannins have interesting anti-cancer properties. Unfortunately, it is not yet known whether this also works in the body. Blackberries contain many minerals and anthocyanins. Of all fruits, blackberries contain the most vitamin E and blackberries are the richest in calcium and they also provide a lot of iron and magnesium. These minerals are necessary for our muscles, bones and blood.
