Scientists from Wageningen University have discovered an apple variety that allergy sufferers can tolerate. This concerns the Santanavariety. Research has shown that people can be allergic to a certain protein in an apple. They experience itching, tingling and swelling of the lips, tongue and throat when eating an apple.
The Santanaapple was originally grown for organic horticulture. The species needs little pesticide because it is highly resistant to apple diseases such as scab and tree canker. The tree is therefore also easy to grow for the consumer. Santana resembles Elstar. The apple is yellow-green with a dark red blush. It is a firm, juicy fruit with a fresh taste.
